The Macau Special Administrative Region Government will orderly promote plastic restriction measures to protect the quality of the environment in Macao. From January 1, 2022, the import and transfer of non-degradable disposable plastic catering straws and beverage stirring rods are prohibited.


The Macau Special Administrative Region Law "Restriction on the Supply of Plastic Bags" came into effect in 2019, stipulating that except for a few specific commodities and shopping places, all retail activities shall not provide plastic bags for free, and offenders shall be fined 1,000 patacas for each plastic bag. After comprehensively analyzing the actual situation in Macao and referring to the experience of other regions, following the implementation of the control measures for disposable styrofoam tableware, the Macau Special Administrative Region Government has adopted the Law No. 7/2003 "Foreign Trade Law" as amended by Law No. 3/2016. Article 5 (1) (5) stipulates that the Chief Executive’s directive No. 122/2021 prohibits the import and transshipment of non-degradable disposable plastic catering straws and beverage stirring rods. The relevant Chief Executive’s directive will be in January 2022. Effective from the 1st.
